About

The Importance of Foot Care

  • Are you unable to trim your toenails due to arthritis, lack of flexibility, or poor vision?

  • Do you have thickened, yellow, misshapen, or fungal toenails?

  • Do you have foot pain or hard calluses or corns?

  • Do you have diabetes and/or decreased circulation that increases your risk of infection?

  • Are you unable to leave your home due to illness or lack of mobility?

It's easy to overlook the importance of healthy feet, but foot-related problems can affect your general health. Three out of four people develop serious foot problems in their lifetime. These problems put our independence and well-being at risk.

Foot problems can be an early warning sign to serious health issues, such as diabetes, poor circulation or nerve damage. These health conditions may first be manifested in the feet. For this reason, it is very important to pay attention to your feet.

As we age, we often lose the ability to properly take care of our feet due to visual impairment, cognitive decline, weakness, decreased flexibility, immobility or pain.

Did you know?

  • 75% of foot problems in people with diabetes are PREVENTABLE by proper foot care on a regular basis.

  • Foot problems are a risk factor for falls in the elderly population.

Foot Assessment

  • With diabetics, even a small wound such as a blister from tight shoes can cause damage, lead to infection and further complications. Diabetes decreases blood flow, so injuries are slow to heal.

  • Assessing for changes in the foot related to disease processes, medication usage, or trauma is a vital part of every visit by our nurses.

Toenails

  • Trimming, thinning and filing of the toenails are part of a routine visit. Keeping the toenails in good condition improves mobility, decreases fall risk, enhances comfort and promotes a good shoe fit.

  • Regular maintenance of your nails will allow you to lead a more active lifestyle while improving your overall health and well-being.

Corns and Calluses

  • A callus or corn is thickening of the skin due to repeated pressure or friction. The skin thickens in response to the pressure; this is your body’s way of protecting the underlying tissue. Corns ordinarily form on the toes and calluses on the soles of the feet.

  • Reducing their size will improve mobility and decrease discomfort.   â€‹
